Below are mechanical hackamores, rope hackamores, bitless bridles, sidepulls, and other related items for sale on eBay. Please scroll down for a description of the difference between a mechanical hackamore and a bosal.

What Is A Mechanical Hackamore?

In the horse world, the term "hackamore" can be confusing. The word hackamore is commonly used to refer to two totally separate pieces of equipment: 1) a bosal and 2) a mechanical hackamore. Both a bosal and a mechanical hackamore are placed on a horse's head for the purpose of communication during riding, and both a bosal and a mechanical hackamore work primarily by putting pressure on a horse's nose with secondary pressures being applied to the horse's chin and poll. Neither a bosal or mechanical hackamore place a bit inside of the horse's mouth. That, however, is where the similarities end. For a definition of a bosal, please see this page: Bosals for sale. You will not only find a list of bosals for sale on eBay, but also a descriptive article describing what one is, and also a close-up photo.

A mechanical hackamore is very different from a bosal. A mechanical hackamore works off of leverage (instead of a direct pull like a bosal) and is typically used on horses that have completed their training (whereas a bosal in generally considered to be a training device that a horse will graduate out of). Many people use a mechanical hackamore in lieu of a bridle with a bit with the idea that applying the primary pressure to the horse's nose, instead of applying pressure inside of the mouth with a bit, is gentler on the horse. In some cases, this can be true. However, since a hackamore works off of leverage a great deal of pressure can be applied by the rider, knowingly or unknowingly causing the horse pain. As with any bridle, a hackamore must be carefully chosen for its type and style, then used correctly in order to be humane.
