Handy Ranch Horse classes are popular at Foundation Quarter Horse shows. In a Handy Ranch Horse class there are typically six obstacles for a horse and rider to negotiate. Three of the obstacles are mandatory (meaning they are required by show management to be part of the class), while three additional obstacles can be chosen from a list of options. Mandatory obstacles are opening, passing through, and closing a gate; roping a stationary steer; and loading into a stock trailer. Optional obstacles can include a water hazard, hobbling or ground tying, putting on and removing a slicker, backing or riding through or around brush or other obstacles, and others.
