Stetson Cowboy Hat History
"Stetson" is a brand of hat most commonly associated with the cowboy hat, a hat with a tall crown and wide brim. The Stetson hat gets its name from John Batterson Stetson (better known as John B. Stetson), the company's founder. Born in 1830 in New Jersey, he was taught hat making by his father, a professional hatter. As a young adult John was diagnosed with tuberculosis and moved west hoping to improve his health. Over the next few years he tried a number of ways to make a living, including panning for gold. In 1865 he moved back east to Philadelphia and opened his own business as a hat maker.
In his early days as a hat maker John B. Stetson began marketing hats for the rugged Western part of the country he had recently visited and lived in. He made hats with tall crowns so there would be an insulating air pocket between the head of the wearer and the elements, and he added a wide brim to keep the sun, rain, and snow off of the wearer's face. He made his hats from beaver felt so they would be water repellent and hold their shape.
The high-crowned wide-brimmed style of hat made by John B. Stetson became known as a "cowboy hat." The Stetson Hat Company would become the largest hat factory in the world about 20 years after it was founded, making a wide variety of types and styles of hats, but it would be the cowboy hat that the company would be forever indelibly associated with.
