Wild Rag Savvy
Below is some good information to know when buying a
wild rag on eBay or anywhere else.
- Is the wild rag new or used? Most of the ones we have seen are new but
this shouldn't be taken for granted.
- What is the wild rag made of? Wild rags are traditionally made of silk
or satin, but you should not assume this. Many of them are also make of
cotton, nylon, and other materials. Make sure you know what a wild rag you
are interested in is made of.
- How big is it? A good eBay seller will give you exact measurements of
the wild rag.

- What is SASS? When used when describing a wild rag SASS probably means
Single Action Shooting Society, an international organization created to
preserve and promote the sport of Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS).
Caring For A Silk Wild Rag
Many cowboy wild rags are made of silk. Silk is
strong, warm, breathable, lightweight, and naturally wicks moisture away from
the body. A little attention to proper care of a silk wild rag will help prolong
its life and good looks. When caring for your silk wild rag, the information below
should be considered reliable, however, always read and follow any directions
that may come with your silk item.
To Wash
- Most silk wild rags can be washed by hand or in a washing machine if you use
the gentle or delicate cycle. Use cool or lukewarm warm water and avoid abrupt
changes in water temperature.
- Use mild laundry soap (not regular laundry detergent), hand soap, or some other type of mild soap such as
hair shampoo. You can also use special soaps made for silk, but it's not
necessary. Do not use bleach.
To Rinse
- Rinse your silk wild rag thoroughly in plain water. Then put a couple of
tablespoons of white vinegar into some fresh rinse water then rinse your wild
rag again. The vinegar will neutralize any remaining soap and help to revive the
color and shine of the fabric. Lastly, rinse the wild rag
one last time in plain water.
- To remove excess water after hand washing, do not wring or twist the
wild rag. Instead, roll your
silk wild rag up in a clean, dry towel, allowing the towel to absorb the
moisture. If necessary, do this a couple of times using fresh dry towels. Do not leave it in the towel.
To Dry
- Allow your silk wild rag to air-dry naturally by lying it flat or hanging
it. To
keep it soft, give it a good shake several times as it dries.
- You can also put your silk wild rag in the clothes dryer if you use a
heat-free setting.
- Do not put your silk wild rag in direct sun or next to direct heat to dry.
This may damage the fabric or fade the color.
Ironing
If necessary, iron your silk wild rag with an iron set at or below the silk
setting. Excessive heat can damage silk.
