For Sellers
A very common scam (but by no means the only one) is a scam where "buyers" are contacting sellers by email and/or phone and
offering to purchase their horse or other item, usually sight unseen.
Be cautious if you receive such an email. Typically, the "buyer" or the buyer's "agent" pays for the horse (or other item)
with a counterfeit cashier's check. Shipping charges are also commonly included on the bogus cashier's check, but the seller will be
asked to refund the shipping charges at a later time.
If everything works out for the scammers, they not only get the horse for free but they also get the seller tricked into
paying the shipping.
Beware of any suspicious replies you may receive to your ads.
To report suspected activity:
In the United States use the Federal Trade Commission
Consumer Complaint Form, or call them at 877-FTC-HELP (877-382-4357). You may also contact the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
In Canada contact the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (use the "Contact
Us" link at the top of the page).
For Buyers
Beware of a scam where sellers try to sell an item (such as a horse trailer or other item) from a distant location and
suggest getting the item to you through a shipping company. Transactions such as this should be approached with caution as there have
been reports of false sellers who take the down payment and disappear. In at least one case, the false seller used a website to
allow the buyer to look into the shipping company, but the website also disappeared after the down payment was received.
Buyers should also beware of scams that offer buyers anything for free. Scammers will often offer free puppies,
horses, or other kinds of animals. They also offer free pet crates, beds, or a long list of other items, all for free. With
this type of scam the catch is usually that the scammer wants you to pay for the cost of shipping the animal and/or
accessories to your location, when in fact, the animal and accessories don't exist and never did. The scammer simply takes
the shipping fees and disappears.
