What Is Sepia?

Sepia is a color known for its distinctive, rich, reddish-brown tones.  While sepia tones are sometimes associated with the monochrome photography of the 19th and early 20th centuries, current photographs and artwork are often created in sepia due to the beauty and richness of the sepia color tones.

The color sepia gets its name from a type of cuttlefish from the scientific family Sepiida. At one time sepia ink was derived from the ink sac of sepia cuttlefish, but today the color is far more often artificially created.
