About Sherry Cervi

Sherry Cervi (1975- ) was born and raised in Arizona. She is a professional barrel racer, and has won the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) World Champion title at the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) 4 times: 1995, 1999, 2010, 2013.

In 1995 Cervi  was the top money earner throughout the year leading up to the NFR, and therefore earned the right to wear the prestigious “Number 1” back number going into the Finals. She was only the second woman ever to earn that right, after barrel racer Charmayne James in 1987. Also in 1995 Sherry married Mike Cervi, a rodeo stock contractor, who was tragically killed in 2001 in private airplane crash. In 2014 Sherry married team roper Cory Petska.

In addition to raising some of the best-known performance horses in the industry, Sherry’s father has been in the cranberry business for decades, beginning with his grandfather in 1880. The Potter’s are now one of the largest producers for the Ocean Spray co-operative of growers.

About Stingray, Sherry Cervi’s Horse

Sherry Cervi has had several notable barrel horses in her barrel racing career including BC Tin Man, Sir Double Delight (“Troubles”), and Jet Royal Speed (“Hawk”). It’s another of her famous horses, a mare named MP Meter My Hay (“Stingray”) that the Stingray saddle is named after.

Stringray is a 2002 palomino mare by the stallion PC Frenchmans Hayday (“Dinero”) and out of the mare Miss Meter Jet. She is owned by Sherry and her parents, Mel and Wendy Potter, and was raised at her parents’ Potter Ranch in Marana, Arizona. The Potter’s are the owners and breeders of several notable performance horses including Dinero and Miss Meter Jet, Stingray’s sire and dam.

Sherry and Stingray have been a highly successful team, with Stingray having won several awards of her own including:

  • 2011 AQHA Horse of the Year, in a tie with Brittany Pozzi’s barrel racing horse Yeah Hes Firen (“Duke”)
  • 2010 World Champion Barrel Horse
  • Held the previous NFR Arena Record of 13.49

According to Stingray’s Facebook Page, Stingray loves home-grown fresh alfalfa, sleeping in fresh shavings, and her “mom” Sherry, who calls her “Precious.”

The Sherry Cervi Stingray Saddle and Martin Saddlery

The Stingray barrel saddle is the result of a collaboration between Sherry Cervi and Brian Peterson, the General Manager at Martin Saddlery.

The Martin Saddlery website describes the Stingray barrel saddle:

“Introducing the latest addition to the Sherry Cervi Signature Series, the Stingray is made for the rider who prefers a reasonably vertical ride but secure deep seat in training, exercise, and fierce competition. This saddle helps prevent the rider from getting thrown over the front and out of balance. By keeping the hips and knees at ergonomically correct angles at the slower stages of the horse’s gate and letting you sit deeper at high rates of speed, it keeps you on the cantle and behind the jerk of the horse’s stride or stop. This saddle is different than any saddle you’ve tried before, boosting confidence and improving performance.”
